GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
In our little family of five we all have some form of gut issue. I have just read GAPS and I'm transitioning us all into that way of eating for a little while till our guts are healed. Anyone else doing this?

I probably should be D is a white processed carb aholic, hyperactive with some markers for aspergers and sensory processing disorder... add in his fully vaxed status, a hospy birth with drugs, anti biotics and some formula supps even when I was breast feeding and SIGH.
Only thing is the thought of such a massive change is really hard to get my head around - especially when i don't have another adult here to back me up and keep me on the straight and narrow...
I'd love to hear how you go as i work myself up to maybe possibly doing it lol

So far, so good. We're not 100% 'legal' yet but I'd say 99%. I don't want to waste the food we have in the cupboards so using that all up as we go. No gluten though and already it's made a HUGE difference. We will do the intro diet at some stage, but first we're just trying to get to 100% legal foods first. We're eating better than we have in a long time

Re: GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
We're not doing it, but it's something I've considered for a long time. I have a breatharian son and he doesn't eat anything on the short list so it would involve days of starving him and I'm not sure I'm strong enough to do that. Taking all the sugar out of his diet (he eats fruit and carbs) makes an enormous difference to how he feels, and his behaviour (you know when a 3yr old feels like crap ). My daughter is very prone to gut issues, and also had a urinary tract infection recently, she was c/sec born, ff and vaccinated so I know there's stuff that needs fixing. She'd go ok on the diet coz she eats, so maybe I could do it for her and keep it in mind for him when he's older and can understand a bit more about why mummy is starving him.

We're not doing GAPS as such but I'm very interested in all that stuff. Recently I've been doing a lot of reading herehttp://www.eatingcultures.com/tikiwiki-2.2/tiki-index.php and herehttp://heal-thyself.ning.com/
We are quite Weston Price influenced here and eat (at home at least ) a whole-foods diet, avoid unfermented soy etc. Our current focus is adding in more fermented goodies. My first batch of sauerkraut should be ready today (fingers crossed) and we need to start consuming more of the kefir dh makes. We eat it in soaked wholegrain (buckwheat etc) pancakeshttp://www.suegregg.com/recipes/breakfasts/blenderbatterwaffles/blenderbatterwafflesA.htm but I don't think we really need so many grains (even soaked, low/non-gluten ones).
Sorry, rambling totally off-topic, I'm just really interested in nutrition
Good on you for taking the GAPS plunge. I hope it pays off for your family, little ones in particular. A has a few markers for GAPS doesn't she?

In the early stages of GAPS (remind me what they're called again?) you can't eat grains can you? I think they come later.
Re: GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
Yep greenie, A has eczema, gut issues, really bad breath, emotional upsets (more than 'usual') and liver/kidney stuff going on. She also had thrush as a little tot.
I'm pretty sure R has coeliacs or a very severe intolerance to gluten.
Today my folks came over and took us out to a cafe. BAD MOVE Now I feel crap, A is whiny and R is a space cadet! But, not beating myself up about it, we'll keep on going great guns.
Yep Nut, no grains at all. I think that goes on for a couple of years. It's really hard! But doable.

Re: GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
see that is why GaPS scares me - it involves completely rethinking how we eat and by extension how I cook, shop etc
and baking! I would miss baking a lot. I know they are all tiny things to worry about compared to my kids health, but I have a lot of trouble getting my head around it...

Me too. It is really hard to rethink feeding times. My dd2 LOVES crackers, bread, rice etc so taking all those things away is hard, but at the moment with all the summer fruits and berries it's been relatively easy. Spent HEAPS of money though.

Re: GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
YES!!! The planning freaks me out! and it would be very expensive I bet! how much has it raised your budget by?
Re: GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
don't even talk to me about the cost side of it, that terrifies me more than anything. i can totally blow my food budget just be walking through the fruit and veg section of the market...
Re: GAPS ~ Gut and Psychology Syndrome
yeah it's easily done .... I reckon it'd involve masses of planning and pre cooking.
